Like the Tide

The women waded into the water every day and, from its muddy uncertainty, fished out their life. They rise one by one like ripples on the water, crash and merge into each other's lives but always come ashore. Like the water that reflects the grey blue skies, the women embody a dual image of a weather-worn exterior that shimmers with softness and care.

The clam fisherwomen of Delta Po symbolize an extraordinary shift in gender equity in a male-dominated industry. Their silent revolution doesn’t fit the conventional narrative of feminist empowerment, and yet their presence on the water has transformed this remote, traditional, rural region of Italy from within.
