Cara Ada—Dear Ada

Cara AdaDear Ada started as a conversation I wished I could have had with my grandmother about my life in New York City and my neighborhood in South Brooklyn. Later it turned into something deeper: a reflection about the internal dynamics of the relationship between the Italians in Italy and the Italians in New York City, their sense of home and traditions, and the balance between isolation and the search for community identity.

“I often go back to Italy, but it has changed so much that I don’t even understand the language they speak.”—Maria, Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, April 2021
