This Place Called Home

As the UK entered its third national lockdown on January 4, 2021, schools and local businesses shut down, shops boarded up again, and life in Clapton, a fast diversifying and gentrifying section of East London, came to a stand-still. Confined within four walls, the concepts of home and community were rapidly redefined for many.

This Place Called Home is a multimedia piece that documents cohabitation during the pandemic in a modern apartment complex, where each dwelling is its own miniature landscape. The work tells the story of a community and its surrounding neighborhood, a microcosm of the global city, centered in an urban regeneration development in Clapton, East London. The narrator is one of its residents, an eleven-year-old girl named Helena, who provides a raw, unfiltered view of the new reality.
